When You First Begin Practicing Yoga, What Happens?

Journey Healing Centers focuses on Yoga primarily as a healing practice for men, women and children of all ages.

People often wonder what happens when you first begin practicing yoga. For some, it may be a spiritual journey that takes them into the depths of their souls while for others it’s simply about getting in shape by improving flexibility and strength. No matter your reason for starting out on this path, one thing is certain: you will feel different than before you started. Here are five ways to know if yoga has changed your life or not.

Here are Five Tips for Beginners

1. When in a yoga pose, remember to breathe! Pranayama is stressed a lot when it comes to yoga. Deep breathing helps you to relax and can help with poses that require you to stay still for extended periods of time. Also, be sure to take breaks when needed throughout your practice. Yoga is supposed to be relaxing, so don’t push yourself too hard if you feel your body giving out on you!

2. Many yoga poses are named after animals or objects that move similarly in order to provide the most accurate description possible. For example, the downward dog looks like a dog stretching its front legs and pushing its rump into the air. If this position hurts your wrists, try supporting them on a towel or mat to give them some extra cushioning.

3. Don’t be afraid to ask for help! If you’re having trouble with a pose, remember that there is no such thing as a stupid question and most instructors will gladly provide tips and tricks on how to perfect your form.

4. Be mindful of what you eat before yoga. Some foods digest quickly and cause bloating while others have intense odors that can affect the mood of the class or throw off fellow practitioners around you. It’s better to play it safe rather than sorry! Also, try not to drink too much water right before practice since it may make you have to go during class.

5. There are many beginners poses that are good for people who are just starting out. Some of these include: Downward dog – this pose is great for stretching your arms, back, and legs Child’s pose – this pose is great for calming the mind Bridge pose – good for increasing flexibility Tree pose – helps with balance and concentration. This is a great beginner’s balancing pose Warrior one or two – strengthens the legs and hips Chair Pose Half Moon Warrior III.
