What Exactly Is Yoga? What Is The Significance Of It?

Journey Healing Centers focuses on Yoga primarily as a healing practice for men, women and children of all ages.

Yoga is a system of exercise that was developed in India around 5,000 years ago. There are many different types of yoga that can be used for both spiritual and physical purposes. The main idea behind yoga is to bring the mind, body, and spirit together as one. Yoga has become very popular in the United States over the past few decades with an estimated 16 million Americans practicing it on a regular basis (Yoga Journal). Yoga’s significance lies within its ability to provide all-around health benefits through stretching and breathing techniques along with meditation. It provides people who practice it with more energy while also decreasing stress levels, anxiety, or depression; making them feel healthier overall.

Here’s a Guide on what These Different Styles of Yoga Mean

1. Anusara Yoga – A type of hatha that focuses on alignment through poses. It was created by John Friend in 1997 after he broke away from Bikram creator, Kripalu Yoga teacher, and Ashtanga Vinyasa practitioner, Krishna Pattabhi Jois. The main difference between Anusara and most other types of yoga is that it allows for occasional tension or compression in the joints so long as they are kept safe, whereas many styles of yoga focus on opening up your joints and minimizing compression.

2. Bikram Yoga – Also known as “Hot Yoga”, Bikram consists of 26 poses done in a very warm environment (usually about 105 degrees Fahrenheit). It was created by Bikram Choudhury in the 1970s, of which there are now over 600 studios worldwide! This style of yoga is intense, but not for beginners. It focuses on detoxifying the body through sweat while also increasing flexibility. If you’re interested, check out my review on the Bikram Yoga Hamilton studio!

3. Iyengar Yoga – Created in the 1930s by BKS Iyengar, this form of yoga focuses on aligning your body with gravity through the careful use of props. These can include blocks, straps, and blankets to help you get into certain poses that may not be accessible otherwise. The practice also focuses on correct breathing patterns while holding the poses for an extended period of time. This style is excellent for beginners since it helps them understand how their body moves. However, if you’re looking for something more intense than pure relaxation or meditation, I’d recommend another type of yoga-like Ashtanga or Vinyasa Flow.

4. Kundalini – Kundalini’s main focus is to unite your body and mind through the use of controlled breathing and meditation. It was created by Yogi Bhajan in 1969 and focuses on balancing your left and right brain as well as the energy coursing through your spinal cord.

5. Vinyasa – Vinyasa, also known as flow yoga (which I teach!), takes a no-nonsense approach that moves from one pose to another without any breaks between each posture. This sequence flows smoothly from one pose into the next making it an excellent style for those who want their movement throughout their yoga to be uninterrupted.

Now that you know what each of these styles is, it’s time to try them out for yourself! If you’re not sure where to start or how to get started with yoga, give us a call.
