Periods can be a pain, literally and figuratively. We all know that they come with cramps, bloating, headaches and fatigue. But there’s one thing we don’t often think about: how to stay active during our periods. In this article, I will discuss what activities are safe to do while on your period as well as some things you should avoid because of the risk of injury or infection. I’ll also go into detail about whether or not it’s possible to perform yoga during menstruation!
Things you should avoid because of the risk of injury or infection:
1. If you’re looking for a safe way to stay active during your period, there are many enjoyable things one can do if they avoid certain sports or exercises. Some activities include walking, swimming, Pilates, cheerleading and light weight training (at least until cramps become uncomfortable). If you choose to partake in any athletic activity it’s important that you learn proper form from a qualified instructor. Exercise resulting in loss of balance is not recommended as there is a greater chance of injury when you are menstruating.
2. For women who are very active, I recommend using a tampon during your workout. If you are using this method I would suggest modifying poses to avoid having the string slip into sensitive areas.
3. If you choose to practice Kundalini Yoga while on your period there are four kriyas that can be done without increasing risk of infection or pain: Shabad Kriya (a breathing meditation), Meditation in Action, Breath of Fire and Sat Kriya (A Kundalini Yoga exercise which gives strength and endurance). However, there are many kriyas that should be avoided due to increased blood flow to the pelvic area. Please consult with an experienced yoga instructor if you have any questions.
4. If you are menstruating and would like to learn yoga, I recommend being in the privacy of your own home, wearing dark clothes during practice. By wearing dark clothing it will be easier to see if there is menstrual blood spotting on your clothes which can happen if you are practicing certain breathing techniques or physical exercises designed for men. Also, please note that some poses will increase menstrual flow so don’t try anything too strenuous if you are uncomfortable with this possibility. If you find that cramps become difficult when sitting in meditation then I suggest lying down with a pillow under your lower back. If done correctly this method will alleviate discomfort while still allowing one to meditate quietly.
5. It’s also important to remember that stress can cause menstrual cramps and pain, so if you’re menstruating and feel like something is aggravating your discomfort I recommend avoiding it (i.e. readings). If you still feel the need to practice then please do whatever feels comfortable for you at that moment in time.
6. First off, make sure to use a tampon and lightweight sports pad (if practicing outdoors). Usually one can practice Kundalini Yoga up until the day before they expect their period to begin. These classes are open to women in all stages of their cycle and no yoga attire is required.
7. If you wish to meditate while menstruating it’s best not to practice Kundalini Yoga or any exercise that increases blood flow in the pelvic region. I do suggest doing some kind of quiet meditation so as to not further aggravate cramps and discomfort. There are many methods for this including Shabd Kriya, Sat Kriya, Breath of Fire, Meditation in Action etc… Some yogis also recommend using crystals during times when one is menstruating. It can be very beneficial to place crystals around your chakras (i.e black tourmaline) or putting a rose quartz under your pillow.
